Your Wife Stopped Believing You'll Change

Aug 18, 2026

If your wife has stopped believing you’ll change, one of the worst things you can do right now is try harder to prove her wrong.

Every time you point out how much better you’ve been, explain how hard you’re trying, or desperately need her to notice your progress... you may actually give her more reasons to doubt you.

In today’s video I am going to break down the biggest moment that so many husbands completely mishandle, and if YOU can handle that moment DIFFERENTLY, you can stop trying to convince her you’ve changed... and start giving her something she can actually believe.

Let me show you what I mean.

SHE ISN’T JUDGING TODAY BY TODAY

One thing that has to be understood right away for you to get the best value out of this video is that you have to break free from the assumption, even subconsciously, that your wife is judging you only by what you did today.

In reality, whether it seems fair or not, she is comparing what happened today with everything she has seen before today.

I am a big foodie so I do love throwing out restaurant analogies.

Think about a restaurant you used to love.

You go there five times in a row and every time something goes wrong.

Your food is cold, they forget part of your order, the service is painfully slow, and nobody seems to care at all.

You’re going to stop expecting a good experience.

Then you think, you know what I really did love this place so let me go back there one more time…

And everything this time is perfect.

The waiter is great, food is amazing, everything comes out on time, and they are even very attentive to the drink refills before you are even done yours.

You’re not going to leave saying, excellent this restaurant has changed I COMPLETELY trust them again.

You’re probably going to say that was actually really good but because of those 5 other horrible experiences in a row, part of your brain is still thinking “let’s see what happens next time.”

You’re going to be a bit skeptical because those 5 out of 6 visits were just SO bad.

Your wife is going to approach it the same way.

If she spent years experiencing defensiveness, withdrawal, people-pleasing, anger, broken promises, emotional distance, or feeling like every difficult conversation eventually went nowhere or straight to a heated argument...

One good week does not instantly erase the reference point she built over years.

Simply put, there is just WAY more evidence for the old version of you than she currently has for the new one.

And as difficult as this may be, you have to be able to compartmentalize it so that you don’t take her skepticism personally.

As soon as you start taking it personally, that is when you start to let the snowball roll down the mountain of responding emotionally and start to build resentment.

You will start to think she is purposefully refusing to see anything you’re doing or that nothing is ever good enough anyways because she has already made up her mind.

That just continues to build in you and then the frustration starts leaking out.

So you have to make sure you don’t get to that point, and if you already feel a bit of that inside, I want you to reframe things and really look at it clearly like this::

She may simply need more evidence than you have supplied yet.

When you refocus that thought process that changes your approach along with it.

Now, you don’t have to force her to update her opinion of you today or by tomorrow at 5pm..

Your job is to keep becoming someone whose behavior gives that old opinion she has of you less and less evidence to stand on.

…But there is another layer to this that can feel even more frustrating.

Because sometimes your wife will not just doubt your changes because of her confirmation bias, she may actually resent them…

SHE MAY RESENT THE CHANGE SHE ASKED FOR

And if you’re not careful, this is where frustration can REALLY set in and put you down the wrong path if you don’t know that it is coming.

Your wife spent years telling you she wanted you to listen.

Now you are making a better effort to listen.

She wanted you to be more involved with the kids.

Now you are making more time..

But yet, she is still being very cold with you.

That is where it can be very tempting to get caught in the trap of thinking:

“Seriously? What exactly am I supposed to do here?”

Which, on the surface, is a very understandable thought that may come up.

But flip the coin and think how her emotions are going to be processing things.

She may be looking at you thinking...“Why now?”

“I asked for this years ago, so you actually were capable of doing it.”

“Why did it take me getting close to seriously considering the future of things before you finally cared?”

And this is where I want to really go down to core human level stuff.

If your wife spend three or four years giving you hints and saying she feels like she doesn’t have support or that you don’t really hear her, it is a very real and valid emotional response for her to think that you heard her all along but didn’t think it mattered until there was a consequence staring you in the face.

We can’t ignore that from a very valid viewpoint.

Now, that may not be the full truth, right, a lot of the guys I talk to and coach really had no idea that things would get like this.

They were deceived by cultural archetypes and really never had an ill-intention in their body.

So maybe you genuinely did not understand how serious things were and you had your own blind spots.

I have had a few of my clients mention that their wives have straight up TOLD them that they resented the changes at first even though they were finally trying to improve.

So it is a very real and human scenario that you have to be able to navigate, but it also DOES NOT mean trying to improve yourself and build those skills now is a mistake.

I would much rather have you wake up today than never wake up at all.

But it is true that, yes, sometimes your improvement reminds her of how long she felt unheard before the improvement happened.

Truthfully speaking, that can hurt her a bit..

So you have to avoid responding to that hurt by thinking nothing you ever do is good enough for her.

By doing that, you start to turn her pain into an argument about whether you deserve credit for trying, and I promise you that is not going to help you out.

And this is where your change starts getting tested. Because changing while she appreciates you is relatively easy and it feels like smooth sailing.

Changing while she still doubts you?

That is where you find out how real the change actually is.

WHO ARE YOU WHEN YOUR CHANGE ISN’T REWARDED?

Your focus needs to be on who you are when that change ISN’T rewarded.

Let’s say you have been doing really well for a couple weeks.

You stopped chasing every conversation about the relationship and you really started to listen without jumping back and defending yourself.

You are feeling pretty proud of how you have been showing up and that confidence is starting to really feel like it’s building.

Then, BAM,  one night your wife says...“I still don’t believe this is who you really are.”

What happens inside you then?

Because THIS is where so many men undo the progress they were making.

Let me give you a more realistic scenario that I have seen play out. .

You two have a REALLY good evening. You talk for a bit and it really feels like a nice connection again, she actually laughs at something you’re telling her..

The energy feels lighter than it has in months.

You go to bed thinking, okay…okay, that was great. Things might be turning the corner.

The next morning she is cold again, barely talks to you, then later says something like: “Don’t read too much into last night. I’m still moving forward with the separation.”

Yesterday you felt hope, today feels like you got punched right in the guy.

The cardinal sin in this scenario is the common urge to panic and respond to her with “So last night meant nothing to you?”, “I thought we were making progress.” “Why did you act like everything was okay?”, “Can you at least admit things have been better?”

If you go down that path, which is both understandable and very common, actually break down what would have happened.

For two weeks you were showing her a calmer version of you.

Then the moment she pulled the emotional reward away...you started reaching for her to give it back.

The second she did not validate your change you started chasing her to acknowledge it.

That straight up communicates to her that your new behavior may still be attached to a reward.

It tells her the new behavior may still be attached to a reward, which is her approval.

That is what will hurt your rebuilding of attraction and connection again because that is the antithesis of being a masculine leader.

I am not trying to make you an emotionless robot.

You are allowed to be disappointed and think it sucked, but if you are prepared knowing this is the bumpy path that her emotions have to go to in order to get through to that other side and start warming up to the new you, it makes it a lot easier to stay the course.

That is exactly why you have to commit to becoming that new man for you, without desperately needing her to believe you.

Because if you can’t do that, you end up like a lot of men who are reading the wrong scoreboard, which is a big problem.

SHE IS NOT YOUR SCOREBOARD

If your scoreboard is your wife’s mood, you are going to drive yourself crazy..

Your wife’s feelings matter and her feedback matters.

You should absolutely pay attention to what your behavior is creating around you.

But you cannot make every single emotion she has your report card on whether you are succeeding.

The absolute best scoreboard you can have while going through this transformation that will actually get you from point A to B, is a scoreboard you actually control.

That scoreboard of controlling the controllables of asking yourself the right questions:

“Did you live today like the man you’re trying to become?”

Did you speak clearly instead of people-pleasing?

Did you lead yourself through your emotions instead of making someone else responsible for calming them down?

Things of that nature…THAT is your true scoreboard.

You can see the HUGE difference; none of those questions I said or any of the like require your wife to smile at you afterward or give you some sort of reassuring reaction.

The big shift I needed to change in my life was not needing my spouse to give me a gold star at the end of the day.

That doesn’t mean I was arrogant or not caring about her feelings, but stayed true to my values which helped me navigate how I wanted to show up and be a leader regardless of what happened.

Being able to show up like this and really transform into that new grounded identity with whatever situation shows up consistently, and being able to really understand how to create emotional safety for her..

Well that starts to do two things...

HER OLD STORY STARTS LOSING ACCURACY

The first is that the older version of you becomes much harder for her subconscious to predict.

The second, more important thing, is that she starts to really become curious that this new you may ACTUALLY be a new you…

Right now she has a pretty clear mental prediction about how every situation with you will go, that is frankly pretty accurate based on past experience…

But new you shows up differently in these situations:

She raises a concern, you don’t immediately defend yourself.

She asks for a little bit of space, you don’t break down and panic.

You are approaching scenarios like this differently, which starts to really wreak havoc on her confirmation bias.

And that is much more powerful than you giving her another speech about how different you are.

Because eventually she may start thinking...“Huh.”

That little “huh”... a 3 letter word with only 2 letters in it,  matters big time.

That HUH is a sign that she is forming some curiosity that maybe the old explanation she had of you is becoming less and less accurate.

And before someone can believe the new story about you, that old story has to stop feeling completely certain to her.

That cannot be a forced or rushed process.

That is why consistency matters so much more than intensity.

Most men can be incredible for ten days when they are terrified, but very few men can quietly build themselves for months without needing someone else to constantly tell them it is working.

That is where the real transformation happens.

And now we can finally answer the question underneath this entire video.

How do you convince your wife you’ve changed?

STOP TRYING TO CONVINCE HER YOU’VE CHANGED

Well…you don’t…

Now BEFORE YOU CLICK OFF…what I mean is, you don’t convince her in the way that most men think they have to.

You are not going to find the perfect speech or explain your intentions so well that years of her  doubt just disappear.

Belief has to become her conclusion. And it is your job to start showing up for yourself first and begin leading her towards that conclusion naturally.

You absolutely can give your marriage a much better opportunity to heal by making sure the man she interacts with tomorrow is not simply the same man she stopped believing in yesterday.

When you stop focusing so much on that outcome of getting the right reaction from her, your change starts to look MUCH more believable.

Now if you want to take the fastest way forward, you really need to know what the right changes are you have to make and have someone help you cut through the noise and apply the right principles to your specific situation.

That's exactly why I created my free Relationship Rebuild Masterclass.
