Your Wife Is Having An Affair? Don’t Fight The Wrong Battle
Oct 09, 2026The most dangerous mistake you can make after finding out your wife is having an affair might not be getting angry. It might be making the other man the center of everything you do next.
Because once that happens, you can very easily start fighting a battle that feels like you’re fighting for your marriage… when you’re really fighting for something completely different.
And I’m not telling you to ignore the affair, accept it, or patiently stand by while another relationship continues.
But there is a massive difference between fighting for your marriage and fighting to be chosen.
So before you decide what to do next, I want to help you get clear on what kind of situation you’re really in, because that changes how you should handle everything that comes after it.
BEFORE YOU REBUILD ANYTHING, KNOW WHAT YOU’RE STANDING IN
One thing I would establish fairly early is whether you are dealing with an affair that has genuinely ended, or whether you are still standing inside an active triangle of you, her, and him.
Because there are a couple different scenarios you could be looking at if you’re dealing with an affair by your wife.
Your wife could have ended contact, told you what happened, decided she is very regretful and really wants to see whether the marriage can be repaired, and now the two of you are working through and unpacking all of the damage as a result of what happened.
That’s one scenario.
But you can also end up in this incredibly confusing middle ground where your wife’s affair has been exposed, yet the other relationship has not really gone away.
And that middle ground can absolutely mess with your head because there may be enough of your normal marriage left to keep your hope alive.
You might still have normal conversations at the dinner table and handle all the family obligations together.
Yet you still feel the next day that she is distant, or you find out she is still talking to him, and everything just smashes back to that feeling of square one.
That is where you can start getting pulled around by every interaction that you have with your wife. The good day feels really good and the bad days feel like another step where your marriage is gone.
But neither one (a good day or a bad day) necessarily tells you what you need to know.
Good, positive interactions with her does not automatically mean the affair is over, just like one cold interaction does not automatically mean your marriage is finished.
The thing that really matters the most is whether she is still investing in that other relationship.
Is she still protecting contact with him and is there that level of secrecy around it?
Is she still building emotional intimacy with him while telling you she is trying to figure out the marriage?
THAT is the part you need clarity around.
And I’m not telling you that you need to turn yourself into an obsessed PI and spend every waking hour checking her phone, tracking her location, trying to decode every notification, or driving yourself crazy trying to uncover that next smoking gun.
That is just going to consume your entire life and energy very quickly.
But you do need enough clarity to understand what kind of situation you are actually in so that you can evaluate your options accordingly.
Because working through unpacking the damage and deciding whether the rebuilding after an affair that has ended is one thing.
Trying to even consider rebuilding while the affair is still being actively invested in by your wife is something totally different.
So you have to be able to separate the two situations to know what you’re dealing with, and you cannot have your decisions hijacked based on how your wife is treating you if it is up and down like a roller coaster day-to-day.
Once you realize that another relationship is still part of your marriage picture and things start to feel very messy, there is another easy place that your mind can start to go to next.
And that is spending a lot of time comparing yourself to her affair partner.
STOP LETTING HIM SET THE STANDARD
Now you may know who the guy is (I mean how often is it somebody that is a co-worker, or somebody that may be known of for a while), but even if it isn’t somebody you know or are at least aware of, you can easily start to let your mind wander down the road of making her affair partner your scoreboard.
You start wondering whether he is better looking, in better shape than you, obviously one big one a lot of men are programmed to instantly turn too is that he is more successful financially, and just any variable you can think of to compare, you will allow your thoughts to play the sizing up game.
Then what usually happens in sequence is you then begin to start remembering and attaching every complaint your wife ever made about your marriage, to him.
You may think, well she told me that I don’t listen to her, so maybe he listens.
She told me that we don’t have any fun anymore, so maybe he is the fun one.
I was told that I take her for granted, or she feels like I do, so maybe he makes her feel like she is wanted.
And you basically go on down the list on the scoreboard of comparison with this guy.
It may be true, it may not be true; but what should be taken into account is that you want to avoid becoming so defensive about what has happened that you ignore information that can teach you something in a genuine way.
If your wife has given some information to you, as hard as it may be to hear, it can be very important.
So if she tells you that talking to this other guy made her realize how unheard she had felt in your marriage, the useful part of that information is that she felt unheard.
You may need to sit with that.
Maybe there were years where she tried to talk to you and you were mentally somewhere else, just totally checked out from listening to her. .
A lot of cases I have heard in talking to guys who apply for my coaching program is that they believe providing, working, handling responsibilities and keeping everything running is enough.
It is a shock to know that those things are all amazing things that are done, but the relationship underneath with your wife can slowly become more and more disconnected from an emotional standpoint..
You have to understand how key that is without being too bitter about what has taken place.
But regardless of whatever you learn from what your wife has communicated to you about the situation, you cannot turn this other guy into the standard that you are so focused on beating.
You have to be able to learn from the gap that she has presented to you as her reasoning (whether you believe justified or not; we are operating from first principles so we have to strip things down to their core)...
And you cannot make the other guy your curriculum. You can’t look at him and think, okay he does this so I can do this and be better.
If your focus turns to “how do I become better than this guy?” you have lost the plot and you are almost now turning it into a zero sum game.
By focusing entirely on "beating" or being better than him, you lose sight of your own identity, values, and self-worth.
When you do that, you essentially hand him far too much influence over your life.
If you’re going to go to the gym because of him, or change the way you dress because of him, or speak differently ... .whatever you start tallying up as your perceived differences as to why she is attracted to him…
You start changing parts of your identity because some guy you probably don’t even respect has become your measuring stick.
That is just way too much power to give him. He shouldn’t have any power over you at all.
If this unfortunate situation exposes something in the way you have been showing up as a husband that you know needs to change, then change it.
But make the change because you agree with it, not because you peak over the shoulder of your wife and believe it’s because it is something he has and you don’t.
Make it because you look at yourself and think, Yeah, I don’t want to keep showing up that way for me, not because you’re trying to score higher than this other guy.
And that leads into probably the hardest part of this entire video, because another thought process you may lead yourself down is to really go towards one extreme or the other.
LOOK HARD AT THE MARRIAGE WITHOUT BLAMING YOURSELF FOR THE AFFAIR
Look I am not going to say this is an easy or fun discussion to have because the feeling of finding out the person you love had, or is having an affair, can fill you with a lot of emotions and reactions.
And I know that everyone is different in how they handle things.
There are some guys that will give you advice to take the absolute hardline stance and say, that’s it…1 strike rule applies.. She cheated. End of story. Nothing that happened before that matters anymore.
Which, if that is something that you agree with deep down and feel, then that is your prerogative to have.
And you need to unpack that for yourself and decide what you want to do moving forward.
On the other side you can end up with relationship advice where they will tell you that it is entirely your fault that the affair happened because you failed to create the right relationship.
And I just don’t think that is a fully true statement.
If your marriage had serious problems before the affair happened, you need to be willing to look at them.
If you stopped paying attention to your wife years ago, you have to own that.
If a lot of the conversations with her led to you being defensive or explaining why she was wrong, getting angry or completely shutting down, you have to own that too.
If the two of you slowly became people who managed the mortgage, the kids, groceries, work schedules and everything else while barely having much of a marriage underneath all of it, don’t hide from that now simply because she made a bad choice.
You need that information to work with moving forward.
You are going to want that information whether this marriage survives or not because if there are things in the way you handle relationships that need to change, you should take those lessons with you for the rest of your life.
But what also needs to be said very clearly is this:
Understanding how your marriage became vulnerable is not the same thing as accepting responsibility for somebody else’s affair.
The condition of your marriage is something the two of you created together over time.
The decision to lie, hide contact, cross a boundary or become romantically involved with somebody else belongs to the person who made that decision.
I am not telling you to hold resentment and just blame her and wash your hands from responsibility, but you didn’t make that decision to have an affair.
You can acknowledge that your wife was deeply unhappy without deciding that therefore she had no choice.
She had choices.
And accepting responsibility for choices you didn’t make does not somehow make you more accountable or more mature.
It just makes the picture blurry.
What we really need to focus on is having ownership, but having accurate ownership.
If something is yours (like some of the examples I mentioned about your behavior and how you have shown up in the marriage), own it all the way.
Don’t minimize it.
Don’t immediately follow every admission with, “Yeah, but look what she did.”
Once you have genuinely owned what you believe are your faults in the relationship, leave her choices where they belong.
Being able to separate those two becomes really important when you get to the practical question that a lot of men in this situation eventually run into:
What are you supposed to do if she is still involved with him?
YOU CANNOT REBUILD INSIDE A TRIANGLE
And what I am going to try and do here is make this part much less messy and complicated than people sometimes do.
If your wife tells you she wants to work on your marriage while continuing to build a romantic relationship with another man, those two things are clearly working against each other.
I am not saying she can flick a switch and instantly stop feeling anything toward him.
I get that flipping the emotions like that is not that simple.
What I am saying, though, is that trust is extremely difficult to rebuild while the thing destroying trust is still actively being protected by her.
That is a huge point of contention when you’re considering fixing the marriage alongside her even though the affair took place.
This is where you really have to really take boundaries into consideration.
You’re not going to use boundaries in a way to control what she is doing, you can’t dictate and control every thought and feeling she has.
Boundaries are really just a way to communicate what you will and won’t accept.
You can’t make her choose to work on your marriage because you found some perfect controlling script to say to her.
But you absolutely can decide what kind of marriage you are willing to participate in.
Telling her that she is not ALLOWED to speak to him anymore, versus… telling her that you want your marriage to work and you are willing (if that is the case) to look at the problems between you two and work on your part of things.
But…you are not willing to pretend you’re rebuilding the marriage while an active romantic relationship with somebody else is continuing parallel.
Now you have presented in a confident manner, in a matter-of-fact manner, a boundary where you are not dictating what she is to do.
But you have given her choices, and you have yours as well.
And it is important, because fear is going to try to convince you that if you draw any line at all, or set any boundary like this, it will automatically cause her to go pick him.
So the common move for guys in your position is to start becoming unbelievably accommodating.
You think that if you stay calm enough and become the most perfect husband, don’t create any friction and just people-please towards her, that she will eventually compare the two of you and realize you are the better choice.
And doing that will NOT get you the chance to rebuild your marriage.
Which leads us right into the part that is so critical to your success or not if you’re willing to work things out with her and see past her indiscretions.
DON’T LOSE YOURSELF JUST TO KEEP A PLACE IN HER LIFE
You cannot lose yourself and your identity just to keep a place in her life because you believe that if you do that, it will tilt the scales in your favor.
I get that even though the tough times, and her unfortunate decision to have an affair, you ultimately still love your wife and that is why you are willing to work through what has happened.
And when everything feels like it can just disappear, even a small piece of the marriage can start feeling incredibly valuable to you.
When you are terrified of losing the whole thing, half of something can feel a lot safer than nothing.
You want to make sure that trying to work through things and save your marriage doesn’t mean you accept ANY version of the marriage just so you can say you still have one.
You have to start upping your standards as part of your identity shift while you are taking ownership for your parts.
If you set a boundary like I said a short while ago, or anything along those lines that lives up to the standard you are setting for yourself, you have to make sure you live up to that standard as well.
That is what is also going to help you build that respect back.
THE RIGHT BATTLE
So we will land the plane here in a moment but this is the entire crux of this video.
You have to be fighting the battle that is keeping yourself clear enough during one of the most painful situations you can go through in order to still think properly.
You are not battling against the other guy.
You’re not battling to FORCE your wife to feel differently by some arbitrary timeline.
And…listen to this one, this one is very key, you are NOT battling to prove you are worthy enough to be selected.
That mindset has to be thrown out in the trash.
The battle you are in is taking whatever lessons this marriage has for you without convincing yourself that you deserved the betrayal just because you weren’t a perfect husband..
And you use that direction to become the guy who can confidently say yes, “I want my marriage, but I am not just going to accept ANYTHING as long as she doesn’t leave”.
No you cannot force your wife to choose the marriage and take full ownership for what she did and make the changes she has to..
I wish there were some perfect sentence I could give you that would make that happen, but there isn’t.
What you can decide is what kind of man will be standing there if she does decide to do that work, and you decide you want it as well.
And as painful as this experience is to deal with, if it has brought to light the bigger problems that were hiding underneath your marriage — resentment, trust, communication, loss of connection, or you simply have no idea how the marriage you thought you had got to this point — I have a free Relationship Rebuild Masterclass linked in the description and pinned comment below.
I go much deeper into the framework I teach for rebuilding yourself and changing the way you show up in your marriage when everything feels unstable and you don’t know where to start.
You can watch that completely free through the link in the description.
And if trust is one of the biggest things on your mind right now, especially because your wife already seems checked out on top of everything else happening, watch this video right here on how to rebuild trust when your wife has checked out.
