5 Signs Your Marriage Isn't Over Yet
Aug 11, 2026If I asked you right now whether your marriage is over... What would your answer be?
Well after coaching many men through struggling marriages I have noticed that the biggest signs your marriage isn’t over yet are usually the exact signs most guys fully overlook.
So today I want to walk you through the five signs that actually matter, not to give you false hope, but to help you stop overlooking the things that may completely change how you see your marriage
Because when you're looking at the wrong signs...you'll usually make all the wrong decisions in trying to save your marriage.
…So let’s jump into sign number one.
SIGN #1 SHE'S STILL EMOTIONALLY ENGAGED
This may sound obvious, but I promise you it isn’t.
A huge misconception that I see is that you start noticing your wife getting more angry, raising her voice, and just oozes frustration at you in every way.
She will be very vocal about telling you she is sick of living this way…
Then our FAVORITE thing as guys may happen…she will start to bring up things that happened five years ago or longer and bring that all to the surface once again in frustration.
It’s not uncommon for you to think that, man she is like right on the brink of being done with me. Everything is spiraling at once.
But…what if anger isn't actually the worst place a marriage can be?
I’m not saying it’s great, or arguments are healthy…
But what I’m saying is, what if the anger is actually a good sign for you?
Not great, but good?
I’m telling you that it is, because anger and emotional indifference are entirely different.
People get angry usually because they still give a crap about something to a certain degree; like it still matters to them.
Underneath anger is usually hurt and under the hurt is something that was important.
That's why I tell you that learning to become grounded and panic every time your wife becomes emotional is so important.
Instead of reacting to the emotion, get curious about what it's actually pointing toward.
The wives who are completely emotionally finished with the marriage often look very different, where they have little emotion left and really don’t spend much of their energy showing frustration.
They are done trying to argue or explain to you how they feel.
Now there are those next level cases where she is emotionally finished with the marriage on her end, but that doesn’t mean it still can’t be saved by you (it just takes a longer process).
And if your marriage is struggling, I know that you have faced situations where she goes very hot and cold and one minute seems fine, and the next minute lashes out at you.
But if you can start to really understand what she is experiencing, that becomes far more useful to you than simply labeling her as angry or lashing out.
I was on a coaching call with one of my newer clients recently, and he mentioned how his wife had come back from a vacation with her family and they were sharing that first evening together in conversation and sharing some wine.
Things actually seemed to be going pretty decent and then seemingly out of nowhere she lashed out a bit and started talking about how nobody ever does anything for her.
The evening was sort of done from there.
We were talking about how much better he handled that situation than previously, and we were deciphering what was really underneath the behavior and her words.
It wasn’t a random outburst, but more likely years of disappointment spilling over emotionally on her end.
The goal is to really understand why that happens and show up differently, and even though it was an emotionally charged moment, he was able to remain calm while it was taking place.
So these things are a process, but what it all means is that you have a very strong chance to save your marriage if she is still emotionally engaged, even if those emotions are frustration and anger.
The next time your wife becomes frustrated or emotional, don't rush to decide what it means about the future of your marriage.
Slow yourself down long enough to understand what her emotion might be pointing toward.
If you react to the emotion, you'll usually make things worse. If you understand what's underneath it, you'll make much much better decisions.
Now, emotional engagement on its own doesn't necessarily tell you everything. The next question is what she's actually doing with that emotion?
Which leads us to Sign #2…a sign that can really have you mistaking it for criticism: she’s still trying to be understood.
SIGN #2 SHE'S STILL TRYING TO BE UNDERSTOOD
If you have watched my channel for a while, you probably heard me say a few times that a huge mistake men make is well, what I just said at the end of sign 1…
They react to their wife’s words instead of trying to understand what those words are actually pointing toward.
I can’t tell you the amount of coaching conversations I've had where clients start listing out all the things their wife has said…
And it’s always some variation of these, like pulling out lotto numbers for the weekday draws…
It will be a mix and match of: "You never listen.", "You don't know me.", "Nothing ever changes.", "You don't think about me.", "You don't even notice me."...Among some other ones.
Usually, after telling me those things, my clients will convey that they almost feel attacked.
But what if she's trying to communicate something much deeper than the words themselves?
Think about this.
Women rarely repeat the same complaint over and over because they enjoy repeating themselves.
They usually repeat it because they don't feel understood.
She doesn’t need to keep saying the same thing, but if she feels like the message isn't getting through...she is going to say it again.
Maybe louder this time, or with more emotion and frustration.
She is figuratively (and sometimes literally - although that is not a great way to communicate) screaming to try and finally be understood.
Now, understanding her experience doesn't automatically mean you agree with every conclusion she’s reached.
But it does mean you're trying to understand the marriage through both sets of eyes, which is a big step in emotional maturity.
And it's something very few men are ever taught.
So the next time she says something that feels unfair or is overly critical, resist the urge to defend yourself right away.
Listen for the experience she's trying to describe instead of just the words she's using.
Sometimes the breakthrough is understanding what she's been trying to say all along.
Now let's take that one step further.
Even if she feels unheard, that doesn't automatically mean she's lost hope.
Which leads us into the next sign, which sounds a lot worse than it really is.
Sign #3, she’s still watching for real change.
SIGN #3 - SHE'S STILL WATCHING FOR REAL CHANGE
Imagine your wife looks at you and says, "I haven't seen any change." or “you’re never going to change”, even though you know you have been making efforts to try and save the marriage.
How would you feel hearing something like that back to you?
I know in my experience, I felt immediately defeated and started to really question what the point was because nothing I was doing mattered.
But I want you to listen again to what I just said…
Being told that she hasn’t seen any change or telling you “you’re never going to change”.
Ask yourself something…if she had completely stopped paying attention, how could she tell you she hasn't seen any change?
Remember I said try to understand underneath the words. Well her words are telling us that she still cares to a point where she is watching and comparing today’s version of you to yesterday’s
Now… she’s obviously not liking what she is experiencing yet, but the important point is that she is still evaluating.
Her subconscious is still working to see something new, even though what she expects is the same you.
I'm not trying to create false hope; I'm trying to help you hear these conversations differently.
You’re going to be able to rebuild that trust and connection with her because she is going to experience a new you over time. She is going to see a genuinely different and transformed man.
So if she’s still watching for change, OBVIOUSLY that bodes well in your favor.
But forget trying to convince your wife you've changed.
Your energy is much better spent becoming so consistent that she eventually doesn't have to be convinced anymore.
Real change isn't something you announce, but something others gradually experience of you.
Now here's where things start to get really interesting.
Because once you stop trying to convince her and start genuinely changing, something else begins to happen.
The conversations themselves often become less about surface-level arguments and more about what's actually been missing for years.
SIGN #4 - THE REAL PROBLEMS ARE FINALLY VISIBLE
By the time most couples reach a marriage crisis, those little arguments begin to matter much less.
For a long time the little squabbles would be about dishes, money, time together, kids, responsibilities around the house, who’s right, who’s wrong, and on and on.
These things SEEM like the problem, but when your marriage gets to this breaking point is when the real issues begin to reveal themselves.
She will start to say very pointed things like she doesn't trust you anymore, she doesn’t feel heard or important to you, or that she feels like she doesn’t really know you.
These are much different topics than just complaining about one argument or those other minor things.
Those are descriptions she is giving you of what it has felt like to her emotionally to be married.
That is pretty painful to hear, but it is incredibly valuable information.
The type of information that you can TRULY use to turn your relationship around if you understand it correctly.
I get that this time of turmoil is a scary point in your relationship, but it also does start to force the real conversation to happen.
And as uncomfortable as that is, it’s a big part of moving forward, because you can't rebuild something if you don't understand what broke in the first place.
Don't waste this crisis by only trying to stop the pain.
Use it to understand what has actually been missing in the marriage.
The clearer you become about the real problem, the less time you'll spend chasing solutions that are NEVER going to fix it.
Now… if you've been seeing some of these signs already, there's one more sign that I would pay very close attention to.
It's subtle, and a lot of guys overlook it or are confused by it because they're waiting for some huge romantic breakthrough.
SIGN #5 - SHE STILL INVITES YOU INTO HER LIFE
This doesn’t look romantic and doesn’t even feel emotional.
Actually, it can be very confusing for you because of all the turmoil you are going through and experiencing her mostly being very cold or shut down towards you.
I recently had a discovery call with a guy who said his wife had mentioned divorce as a possibility, and they were still living on the same property but are de facto separated.
Things are clearly not where he wants them to be, but he mentioned that she had started to invite him to go to some workout classes together.
Not once, I believe it was multiple times.
And they have never done that before.
And this confused the hell out of him because everything for the last bunch of months has been trending completely downward in their relationship and hit him like a ton of bricks.
Again...that is not something overly romantic or emotional, but it shows her inviting him in to spend some time because underneath everything going on, she most likely still feels that there might be changes or is at least still hoping.
We can easily ignore the importance of little moments like that because we are waiting for something bigger, that “i love you” from her wanting intimacy again.
But your relationship is not going to just move on from crisis RIGHT back into intimacy straight away.
If your wife still gives you moments where you're part of her world, don't use those moments to pressure, convince her or try to seek reassurance.
Use them to give her a different experience of you. That's a big part of how trust is rebuilt one interaction at a time.
